Our client, a regional property and casualty insurance company providing personal insurance, commercial insurance and surety products in all 50 states, is seeking a Commercial Lines Master Field Underwriter. This individual must have a solid technical foundation and will act as a financial underwriting acumen for the company's target segments and lines of business. This underwriter will manage and service a profitable renewal book of commercial lines business utilizing the highest level of technical underwriting ability. The Commercial Lines Master Field Underwriter will represent the company among a defined territory of agencies by conducting territory planning, performance analysis and agency management to maximize production, profit and retention. Additionally, the master underwriter will lead the analysis of new business opportunities and drive collaboration meeting processes with independent agents, coach less-experienced field underwriters and mentor agencies. This individual should reside in Illinois and be willing to commute some of the time.

Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite and manage a commercial lines book of business for assigned territory.
  • Represent the company, build strong relationships and manage the book of business to attain profit and revenue objectives.
  • Act as the key contact for specified agencies, as well as lead agency business planning and account inventory management.
  • Build an account inventory of new business well in advance of the expiration date to achieve profit and revenue objectives.
  • Coordinate monthly renewal strategy discussions with underwriting and services teams for individual renewals.
  • Discuss new accounts in the pipeline on a consistent basis, review the opportunity and best approach for the accounts and establish an underwriting relationship with policyholders.
  • Underwrite and collaborate on new and renewal commercial lines accounts, pre-qualify customers and lead the account team to analyze new business opportunities.
  • Coordinate collaboration meetings on large, more complex accounts in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Evaluate exposures to loss, determine pricing and accept or reject accounts based on the company's underwriting guidelines.
  • Make risk acceptability and pricing decisions throughout the policy life cycle.
  • Document underwriting decisions, as well as maintain supporting information and data in accordance with audit standards.
  • Complete the account summary document and share a post-mortem on accounts that are not acquired to improve sales acumen and competitive intelligence.
  • Review, approve or decline underwriting authority referrals from junior field underwriters or managers.
  • Engage in the state planning process, including the rate review process, state plans and annual projections.
  • Serve as the account steward, ensuring all commitments on the account are lived up to and drive standard scheduled periodic communication with the policyholders.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication regarding underwriting procedures and practices, growth and profit goals, state and territory issues and regulations, industry activity and trends, and agency relations.
  • Review quality assurance audits, participate in underwriting procedures and practices projects, and submit recommendations to improve department results, including coverage, pricing or competitive issues.
  • Travel using an assigned fleet vehicle in order to cover assigned territory. This may involve traveling on short notice or other daily driving duties, as needed.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of property and casualty commercial underwriting experience
  • Bachelor's degree in business or related discipline
  • Valid driver's license and a driving record that conforms to company standards

Pay Range:

The anticipated pay range for this position is $120K - $150K annually.
